Unexcused absences unpaid

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

A PROPOSAL TO POTENTIALLY DOCK THE PAY OF STATE LEGISLATORS who have unexcused absences seems to make sense until you realize

The amendment includes no definition of what constitutes an “excused” or “unexcused” absence. In fact, it doesn’t even require that lawmakers’ $76,650 annual salary be docked. It just gives the Legislature the power to do it.

It’s not a “dock”…it’s a “crock”.

US-131 Blow Ups

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

NOT AS BAD AS THE ‘BLOW UPS’ IN IRAQI ROADS:

Road repair crews were out again today patching “blow ups” on southbound U.S. 131 caused when pavement buckled from the heat.

THE ONLY THING COOL at Monday’s Tigers game against the Yankees were the Tigers:

It was a shame, as the home team didn’t win, losing 4-0 and never really threatening much of anything while doing so.

Memorial Day 2006

Monday, May 29th, 2006

THIS PLAQUE says that it memorializes “all American veterans”, but because it is at the base of the flag pole outside the funeral home where the memorial service for my wife’s grandmother was recently held, I’m choosing to use it for my Memorial Day 2006 post:

It is those that fell in the service to our nation that we remember on this day, and I once again have trouble putting into words what I think and feel about those who have fought and died for me and my family.

A year ago on Memorial Day I was in Charleston visiting USS Yorktown at Patriot’s Point, and I’ll admit that I was quite moved by a simple sign in one of hundreds of compartments on that great ship.

Whether you’re grilling in the backyard, out enjoying the fine weather, visiting with family and friends, or taking a baseball game (like Murdoc), do not forget the sacrifice made by so many that has helped make the United States of America what it is.

3 Underwhelming proposals

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

The advisory panel for the riverfront property is underwhelmed by the three proposals submitted. They used the word “lame”. That’s rarely encouraging.

Hot Enough for ya?

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

DECIDED TO GET THE AIR CONDITIONERS into the windows. I don’t particularly care for the heat, and today was warmer than I like. The fact that it’s just getting started is no comfort at all. We’re going to the Tigers game tomorrow, and no, I can’t believe that they’ve still got the best record in baseball, either.

And I don’t think I’m the only one who believes that the whole “Barry Bonds passed Babe Ruth” story is a waste of time. We all know his accomplishment don’t mean squat. Pathetic.

UPDATE: Neil Hayes on MSNBCS.com says it’s unlikely that Bonds can catch Aaron:

If what we’ve have witnessed from Bonds during the first eight weeks of the 2006 season are any indication Aaron will remain forever out of reach. Given his declining skills, concerns about his knee and potential repercussions from his alleged steroid abuse, grand jury testimony and tax history, he will remain safely in second.

Could it be that the “declining skills” are already one of the “potential repercussions”? As in, “they’re watching so stop it”?

But, for what it’s worth, I believe that someone will pick him up if he’s willing. Sooner or later, you’d think, he’d have to catch Aaron. And some club will be willing to lay out a little cash for the opportunity to fill the stands. However, don’t forget that pathetic 1984 season in Seattle that Franco Harris had, trying to catch Jim Brown on the NFL’s career-rushing list. Walter Payton beat him to it, and Franco never got there anyway.

SUV Video

Friday, May 26th, 2006

EMILY BOWNESS fractured the tip of her thumb, bruised her ribs, and suffered a gash on the back of her head when her SUV rolled 12 times.

“I know accidents happen. It’s OK,” Bowness said. “I’m not real sure how you could drive away, seeing that happening in your rearview mirror. How do you not stop to see if I was OK or make sure I was alive? But I know accidents happen, and I’m sure that person has their reasons.”

Not everyone thinks it’s OK.

Michigan Stadium’s GDP

Friday, May 26th, 2006

MICHIGAN STADIUM’S $226 million renovation in perspective at The Foul Pole:

For the $226 mil., you could get, say, the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe (GDP of $214 million), located off the west coast of Africa. This sounds like just another example of America’s glutonous love for entertainment. But then again, Sao Tome and Principe’s population of 193,413 is fairly close to the stadiums new expected capacity, 108,251.

Hunting age lowered

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

THE MICHIGAN SENATE VOTED TO LOWER THE HUNTING AGE:

The main bill would drop the age requirement for hunting deer, elk and bear with firearms from 14 to 12. It would lower the legal age for hunting small game such as birds and squirrels from 12 to 10.

Griffs on the verge of elimination

THINGS DON’T LOOK GOOD FOR THE GRIFFINS. They’re down 3-0 in their playoff series against Milwaukee and they’re down 3-1 at the end of the first period in Game 4. They have to come back tonight to force a Game 5 Friday in GR.

UPDATE: They lost 5-4. Season’s over.
